Reading and Learning in Sun Valley During the Coronavirus

Sun Valley Jose Mier Library Update

Well, it’s been several months since the coronavirus hit California and our local libraries have been closed for some time. Sun Valley Jose Mier is a big proponent of education in our community libraries playing important role. We’re in the midst of summer which is traditionally a time when many children join book reading clubs and check out books from their local libraries. Libraries are also a place where kids can go to have stories read to them. All of these types of activities have been curtailed because of the current pandemic.

But just like other businesses in Sun Valley, libraries have also gotten very creative. Some offer online storytime which will help keep kids occupied and their parents a little saner for a while at least. Another thing that libraries have that is not new but is especially welcome at this time is the ability to check out books virtually. Using your library card you can log into a library’s website, View their e-book lists, and check out of book. The process is very simple. In our case we enter our library card number, select our book, and check it out. The book is delivered through Amazon.com and ends up in our Kindle reader on our iPad. If you have another device like the kindle fire, the book will show up there as well.

With many Sun Valley residents Phil sheltering in place, working from home, or just with the extra time on their hands due to the coronavirus, making use of our local libraries is a great way to take up time as well as educate, inform or just amuse yourself. Reading books keeps the brain stimulated, in the mind occupied. Both of these things are specially needed in the midst of our statewide shutdown.

Sun Valley Jose Mier is looking forward to the day when libraries reopen, we hope it’s soon. When they do you can make use of the Sun Valley Branch Library, which is located at 7935 Vineland Ave., Sun Valley California 91352.

Sun Valley Jose Mier Heatwave Warning

We at Sun Valley Jose Mier know that it’s hot, even though mornings are on the cooler side. We’re sure that you do too. Temperatures are reaching the triple-digit mark so we thought a friendly reminder was in order. If you don’t have to go outside, stay indoors. That goes double for seniors who are more susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration. If you do have to work outside, make sure you drink plenty of water and keep activities to a minimum. We’re in the midst of one of the worst heatwaves in years and the greater Los Angeles area is bearing the brunt of it so play it safe.

Epitome of Sun Valley Stonehurst Living

Allegheny St. Home in Sun Valley, CA

Sun Valley Jose Mier Profiles Allegheny Street Home

As readers of Sun Valley Jose Mier know we are proud of our neighborhoods. Especially unique ones like the Stonehurst area on our northern tip. We’ve written about how our singular suburb contains a surprising amount of horse properties and the home we are showing on this page is a prime example of the identity of Stonehurst.

Allegheny St. Home in Sun Valley, CA
Sun Valley Jose Mier profiles a unique Stonehurst home

As we said previously, Stonehurst includes homes that have existed in the area for close to 100 years. These stone homes, built with rock from the area define the character of Stonehurst and may have even led to the naming of this neighborhood.

For those who don’t know (and you can count us as part of that number) a “hurst” is another (obscure) terms for a hillock, a wooded rise or a sand back in the sea or in a river. Well our Stonehurst is certainly on a wooded rise and the nearby trails are favored by the horse owners in the area.

The home for sale on Allegheny St (just a “stone’s throw” from the Stonehurst Recreation Center) imitates the look of its century-old ancestors utilizing the same stonework. The interiors and amenities, however, are much more modern and the home is priced at $575,000. That’s a bit pricey for only 734 square feet but it does make up for the small area with loads of charm. For those who want (or need) horse property, though, along with a remendous amount of character, this home is what Stonehurst is all about.

As we’ve said before, we’re not in the real estate business but merely want to show what Sun Valley, CA has to offer and we think this unique home makes our city all the more special. We think you’ll agree.

Owning a Horse in Sun Valley’s Stonehurst

Stonehust is Horse Country

So maybe you want to relive the days of the old West and saddle up each evening to ride into the sunset. Well, you can in Sun Valley’s Stonehurst neighborhood. With hills and trails only yards away from your home this hidden enclave is perfect for those wishing to keep horses on their property or (if you’re a new home buyer) purchase a horse after moving in.

Horses are common in Sun Valley’s Stonehurst

Only a few minutes from the 5 freeway and all the urban living that life in greater Los Angeles affords, this area seems like an old rancho. And it really is. There are actual ranches here as well as feed and tack stores to supply your equine needs. If you’re new to owning a horse there are a few things to consider.

First is the cost of the horse itself. You’ll need to do your research to find a horse that suits your needs, is healthy and well-tempered, but after that, then what? You’ll need to budget for horse ownership. On average you’ll be looking at around $2,000 to $4,000 per year in feed. Other costs will include veterinary treatments and those of a farrier. Farriers are a necessity to prevent hoof problems. Look at spending around $350 per year on this. If your horse gets sick, veterinary care may run you thousands of dollars.

Add onto this general upkeep costs and supplies like saddle(s), blankets, grooming supplies—and don’t forget transportation. Do your research and make sure you’re prepared for horse ownership.

All that said Sun Valley Jose Mier thinks our Stonehurst neighborhood is a spectacular option. The area is quiet and infrequently traveled, making it the perfect area to take your horse out for a ride. With most of Stonehurst made up of flat open spaces you can leisurely walk your horse around the streets with little worry. And you can saunter up the Verdugo foothill trails to take in the breathtaking views of the San Fernando Valley any time you want.

We recommend you investigate Stonehurst for all it has to offer the horse owner or buyer.
